The role of pharma?

While the scenarios do not go into this area, it has recently become apparent that there were many problems with how the original decisions about Tamiflu stockpiling were made. This has prompted a recent campaign by the BMJ calling for all data from clinical trials to be made accessible, see below. Also check out Ben Goldacre’s book Bad Pharma for more discussion on this and similar concerns.

BMJ Open Data Campaign. How reliable is ‘official’ information? This dedicated web site looks at how to ensure data from clinical trials is scrutinised openly and independently. It uses Tamiflu as an example and highlights the need to be aware of potential conflicts of interest when taking advice from ‘official’ sources. This ties in with sessions on evidence and critical appraisal, and hopefully will encourage a bit of independent (evidence-based) thinking!
